HIV/AIDS Program Needs Religious Leaders Support

Today.id - Religious leaders need to be actively involved in HIV/AIDS prevention programs. Their great influence can influence people's perspective on the handling of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Thus revealed from the Meeting of Religious Leaders in the Strengthening of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Program that organized by the Commission for the Prevention of AIDS (CPA) of West Java Province and Indonesia's AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), in Bandung, Monday (18/12/2017).

In his speech when opening the event, Drs. H Dady Iskandar M.M, Head of Service Bureau and Social Development of West Java Provincial Secretariat said that this meeting is very important in supporting government programs handling the rate of HIV/AIDS cases in West Java.

"Religious leaders can be an effective 'mouthpiece' for delivering HIV/AIDS prevention messages to the community, even down to the family level. They have many congregations, either in assemblies taklim, in church, or in their respective places of worship," he said.

On the other side, Dady also said that the religious leaders play an important role to suppress the stigma or stigma that is often experienced by People with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).

"However, these religious leaders need to straighten out misinformation about HIV/AIDS. Not all people living with HIV are affected by HIV because of immoral behavior. So, lest we hear again there is ostracism to people living with HIV," he said.

The one-day meeting was attended by participants from several religious organizations in West Java, including Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), NU Muslimat, PW Aisyiyah, PW Fatayat NU, Hurak Kristen Batak Protestan (HKBP), Parisada Hindu Dharma Indonesia (PHDI) as well as from various elements of Bimas in the Regional Office of the Ministry of Religious West Java Province.
