Yugang Bao: Media Had An Important Role To Suppress The Spread Of HIV/AIDS

Today.id - Deputy Asia Bureau Chief-AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), Mr. Yugang Bao, Ph.d said that the mass media, print, online and television have a significant role in suppressing the spread of HIV/AIDS in a region.

Because the media have access through various news to provide explanations to all levels of society about the dangers of HIV/AIDS virus to be able to suppress the rate of transmission of the disease.

"With the continuously news, people will understand what HIV/AIDS is, so it can stay away from any risks that can make a person infected," said Mr. Bao during a casual discussion with the media crew during his visit in Purwakarta, Teusday (23/1/2018).

A media is also expected to eliminate bad stigma to a people who had infected with HIV/AIDS commonly called people with HIV/AIDS (People With HIV/AIDS)

Currently, there are still many people who don't understand the various things about HIV/AIDS, one of which is, how the spread of the virus. Sometimes in somewhere, there are people known as people with HIV/AIDS, the surrounding community will stay away from the person for fear of being infected.

"The spread of the HIV/AIDS virus is not as easy as it has been thought. If you don't want to be infected, you should avoid all the forms of risky behavior, and information about the spread of the virus can be disseminated through the news media," said Mr. Boa.

Not only that, the role of media is also able to provide understanding to the community about the importance of early HIV / AIDS testing, by creating news that can foster community awareness.

In addition to providing understanding to the public, mass media can also increase the government to create programs that can suppress the spread of HIV / AIDS in it's territory.

Mr. bao revealed that there had once been a case in China, where a child has infected HIV/AIDS virus, he was abandoned by his family and not accepted by surrounding community.

The story about that poor child published by a social media and became viral. Knowing about that, AHF helping that child by send it to school and and stayed in the dormitory until graduated to college.

"Can we imagine, if there's no media coverage, what will happen with that child. Viral news also makes the local government to make rules that prohibit abandoned people with HIV," he said.

Mr. Boa said that in addition to suppressing the spread of the virus, AHF had a goals for people who are infected HIV/AIDS not considered bad and have a good health services too.

"Without the support of all parties, one of them is the media, it's impossible that we can achieve that goals," he said. (Red)
